What is Mindful Sustainability?
A comparison of the pillars of Sustainability and the mind body spirit connection pushed a philosophy of mindfulness and created a framework for a system of resiliency through society’s individual association with nature. The primary examples utilized are from the western world’s historical examples of societal environmental value, especially as they can be tied to the economic potential for capitalistic growth. Following these connections, the underlying theme for influencing dominant social paradigms for systemic change was a philosophy of mindfulness shown in the precautionary principle, systems thinking, and ecological awareness. The systems of global economy, environment and equity are approached through an in depth look at current sustainable practices and the positive influence of mindfulness. Political barriers to change current systems are analyzed through the lens of historical examples in which environmental decisions impacted community; and through the action of concentrated spirit within society. Specifically, purchasing power, right to stand, and revaluation of national parks underline the sustainable choices society can make to show the value of the environment. Individuals fostering sustainable behavior leads to continued impact and resiliency through rhetoric and identity to influence their own communities and inevitably the global climate change conversation.
